France has decided to temporarily ban fishing in the Bay of Biscay to protect dolphins.

The ban will be in effect from next Monday (22) to February 20 and it is said that it will affect the fishing zones off the Atlantic coast of the country.

French marine experts have concluded that around 9,000 dolphins die each year in the Bay of Biscay from entanglement in fishing gear.

Local fishermen say the ban is unfair and fear losing money.

However, the French gove ment has promised to compensate all fishermen for the duration of the ban.

According to a request made by environmentalists for the conservation of marine fish, the Council of State, the highest administrative court in France, has ordered the imposition of this ban, according to foreign media.
