Foreign media say that Iran has taken an oil ship with the flag of Marshall Islands in their custody in Oman.

According to foreign media reports, a group of masked and armed men boarded the ship St Nikolas near the port of Sohar in Oman and ordered it to sail to an Iranian port.

Iranian state media quoted a statement from the country's navy saying that this was done in retaliation for the ship and the oil that was confiscated by the United States last year.

It is said that the ship St. Nikolas was supposed to travel between the port of Basra in Iraq and Turkey.

It is stated that the communication links with the ship have been interrupted and the authorities are conducting investigations.

Iranian state media quoted the military as saying that the ship belonged to a Greek company but was an American one.

The ship was carrying 145,000 tons of crude oil and had a crew of 18 Filipinos and a Greek citizen, according to Empire Navigation, the company that owns the ship.

The US has demanded the immediate release of the vessel and its crew, describing the seizure as Iran's latest attempt to disrupt inte ational commerce.
