Nearly 20 billion rupees crop damage per year due to wild animals

According to the Minister of Agriculture and Wildlife, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, approximately 20 billion rupees per year is lost to crops due to wild animals.
Today (05) in the Parliament, in reply to an oral question raised by Member of Parliament Mr. Niroshan Perera regarding the crop damage caused by cattle, the minister said that the gove ment will continue to work on this matter.
The minister mentioned that a Chinese company proposed to take 100,000 soldiers from Sri Lanka and several rounds of discussions were held in this regard and they were requested to make the request officially through the embassies.
This incident received a lot of publicity through the media and because China was insulted, the Chinese Embassy issued an official announcement in this regard and said that such a request has not been made through the Embassy.
The minister said that some environmental organizations went to court and several other countries made inquiries in this regard.
And this loss has happened not only to the farmers but also to the common people and the minister pointed out that due to this, a coconut crop worth about 200 million rupees is destroyed every year.
The people are not against this, but some environmental organizations have opposed it.
The minister further said that he had even sought advice from the inte ational community and even though he met environmental organizations and asked them for suggestions, no successful proposals were presented.
