In order to boost the local tinned fish industry, the Minister of Fisheries Mr. Douglas Devananda has instructed the Director General of the Fisheries Department Mr. Susantha Kahawatta to stop the importation of canned fish from abroad from yesterday (11).
It is said that the discussions held between the representatives of the canned fish producers association and minister devananda at the Ministry of Fisheries focused on the many problems faced by the canned fish industry at present.
The main problem was that it was not possible to sell local canned fish in the local market due to the importation of about 8000 tons of canned fish from foreign countries in the last few months.
The representatives told the minister that the price of canned fish imported from abroad has decreased and due to VAT and cess imposed by the gove ment, they are unable to provide their products at the price of imported canned fish, so they have to close their factories now.
It is said that the minister who gave the answer advised the Director General of the Fisheries Department to take necessary steps to temporarily stop the import of canned fish and also instructed the Secretary of the Ministry to look into the appropriate measures to charge an additional fee for the currently imported canned fish and give him a report.
The Minister who instructed the Director General to provide the import of fish for canned fish to Sri Lankan canned fish producers in times of rising fish prices in Sri Lanka has also given solutions to some other problems of canned fish producers.
