More than 1,000 killed in earthquakes in Afghanistan

Foreign media say that more than 1,000 people have died in the region after the earthquakes that affected weste Afghanistan.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) says that the third earthquake with a magnitude of 6.3 occurred near the city of Herat.

According to local health authorities, at least one person has died in the earthquake.

The World Health Organization says that another 100 people were injured and are being treated at the local hospital.

More than 90% of those killed in previous earthquakes have been women and children, according to UNICEF, the United Nations children's agency.

The epicenter of the latest tremor was said to have occurred 30 kilometers northwest of Herat, Afghanistan's third-largest city, near the border with Iran.

Earlier, the earthquake affected Sindajan, a rural district about 40 km from Herat.

In June of last year, Paktika province was hit by a 5.9 magnitude earthquake, which killed more than 1,000 people and left tens of thousands homeless, foreign media reported.
