The Department of Wildlife Conservation says that a program has been started to check sub-standard power lines throughout the island.

The Department of Wildlife Conservation has stated that the program has been started on the advice of the Director General of Wildlife.

This program has been started after reports of deaths of wild elephants due to substandard electric fences.

It is reported that it is planned to remove the substandard electric fences and make them up to standard under this program.

Meanwhile, the wildlife conservation department says that 12 elephants have died in the past few days this year.

Last year, about 470 wild elephant deaths were reported, of which 50 wild elephants died due to electrocution.
