North Korea claims to have tested an underwater nuclear weapon system in response to joint military exercises by the United States, South Korea and Japan, according to foreign media.

North Korea reportedly tested the 'Haeil-5-23,' a name given to its nuclear-capable underwater attack drones, in waters off its east coast.

Foreign media reports also indicate that the North has conducted such investigations before.

North Korea has repeatedly said it is building up its military arsenal in preparation for war that could break out on the peninsula at any time.

The leader of the country, Kim Jong Un, has declared that the goal of reunification is over and has named South Korea as the main enemy.
